About Us

Nari Unnayan Shakti (NUS) is a non-profit organization founded in 1992 ​under the leadership of Dr. Afroja Parvin to empower women and ​children in Bangladesh. With a strong focus on women's empowerment ​health, education, human rights, pease justice, economic development ​and climate response. NUS aims to create a violence-free, gender-​balanced society. The organization has successfully implemented 79 ​projects funded by 45 donors, has capacity to lead a team of more than ​2,600 people impacting over 1.6 million people across 26 districts.

About the Executive Director

Dr. Afroja Parvin, a human rights activist with 32 years of ​experience, is the Founder and Executive Director of Nari ​Unnayan Shakti (NUS). She has implemented 79 development ​and right based Projects with the support of 45 national and ​international donors and development partners.


She holds an M.Sc. from Dhaka University, studied Gender ​Policy and Planning at University College London, UK and ​completed a Ph.D. on violence against women vary by economic ​conditions. She has also studied on Women in Management ​from the USA, as well as on Policy Level Advocacy on Women’s ​issue in Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul, South Korea


She has presented papers and chaired at international ​conferences in 35 countries, trained over 100 NGOs' ​management level staff and is a TV program anchor and ​lyricist with over 4,000 lyrics and written 23 books.

Where We Work

Nari Unnayan Shakti (NUS) operates across 26 districts through 2607 ​service outlets in Bangladesh, impacting over 1.7 million people. Its ​activities span various sectors. NUS has provided Non-formal education ​to 125,100 poors child labour, children of sex workers, drop our and ​poors and skills and vocational training to 25,080 people, provided seed ​money and stipend for their economics development and poverty ​reduction.


Under health program, NUS had primary health care support, ​HIV/AIDS prevention and control for 10,000 sex workers and around ​140,000 clients of sex workers, malaria prevention and control we have ​supported 1.6 million people, nutrition support for 4,500, referral ​service for TB.


Under gender equality, human rights for peace and justice program ​NUS has socially rehabilitated 2126 and supported 278 children of ​commercial sex workers. NUS provides legal aid, mock trials and ​leadership development training to develop women human rights ​defenders. NUS delivers training, resources, and support to empower ​women and children, aiming for a violence-free, gender-balanced ​society.

Our activities on

Poverty Alleviation ​and Livelihood

  • Educated 125,100 people in basic literacy and non-formal education.
  • Trained 25,080 people in various skills: computer, motor driving, ​mobile repairing, beauty parlour, tailoring, embroidery, electrician, ​and rickshaw mechanic etc
  • Distributed seed money and stipends to 3,112 child labourers, out-of-​school children, poor women, and commercial sex workers.
  • Mentored income generation activities and developed 440 micro-​entrepreneurs.
  • Supported 2,621 commercial sex workers in transitioning to socially ​accepted professions.
  • The projects above have been funded by BNF, AMOD, DFID, ILO, DSS, ​Ministry of Labour and Employment, BNFE, BRAC, ICT Division etc,


Our Activities on

Human Rights, ​Peace, and Justice

  • Conducted awareness, advocacy, and provided legal aid forpreventing gender-based violence (GBV), sexual abuse, and rape.
  • Rescued, rehabilitated, and reintegrated 49 women and girls ​from trafficking through shelter home services.
  • Provided 8 years of shelter home support, food, clothing, ​toiletries, healthcare, skill training, and counselling for 2,126 ​commercial sex workers and 278 children.
  • Delivered gender and development training to 4,224 individuals.
  • Engaged 625 affluent women and 2,225 madrasa students inpeace promotion to prevent violent extremism.
  • The above activities have been funded by SARIQ, USAID, ​UNICEF, ILO, DSS, CIDA AHA, European Union, SAWF/WFA, ​World Bank, ATSEC, Deoalka Foundation, ActionAid, BNCU, ​UNESCO, MSI, save the children, Department of Women Affairs, ​CEDPA Washington, Ministry of Public Administration etc.

Our activities on

Health, Nutrition, ​and HIV/AIDS ​Prevention

  • Implemented malaria prevention and control programs for ​14+ years among around 1.6 million people in Hathazary, ​Fotikchore and Potia under Chottogram district.
  • Promoted awareness, condom distribution, STI treatment, ​and referrals for HIV tests and AIDS treatment in 19 district.
  • Provided primary healthcare services supported by CIDA ​and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • Increased nutrition awareness and distributed food among ​poor women.
  • Above projects have been supported by NASP, GFATM ubder ​BRAC consortium, World Bank, HASAB, UNICEF, UNOPS, ​UNFPA, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Department of ​women affairs, VHSS etc.


Our work on

Disaster ​Management and ​Climate Change

  • Conducted 3 relief programs funded by various organizations.
  • Implemented a sanitation program in Doulatpur, Kushtia ​district, providing sanitary latrines for poor families and girls' ​schools.
  • Provided 3-day training sessions for 8,740 rural women on ​disaster management and climate change impact.
  • Offered vegetable gardening training for 501 farmers.
  • Above projects have been supported by Department of ​women affairs, Danish Embassy, OXFAM, KAWT,
